Over the past five years, Artificial Intelligence (AI) has had a profound impact on multiple industries, with healthcare, finance, and manufacturing being the sectors most significantly influenced by AI innovation. These industries have achieved remarkable improvements in efficiency and transformations in business models through the application of AI technologies. For example, in the healthcare sector, AI is utilized for disease diagnosis, drug development, and personalized treatments. In finance, AI optimizes risk management, fraud detection, and investment strategies. Over the next five years, healthcare, finance, retail, manufacturing, transportation and education are expected to be the key focus areas for AI applications.

Against this backdrop, Springer Nature decided to launch the AI eBook Collection in 2025. We spoke with Celine Chang, Editorial Director for the Artificial Intelligence eBook Collection at Springer Nature.

What was the reason for the launch of the Springer Nature AI eBook Collection and what subject fields does the collection cover so far?

Artificial Intelligence is one of the traditional strengths of Springer Nature's book publications. In this field, we have published a number of classic books, such as Pattern Recognition and Machine Learning, The Elements of Statistical Learning, and Data Mining, etc. These books have been at the forefront of the field, well received by readers, and have had a big impact on the development of the discipline.

As of the end of February 2025, the AI eBook Collection has published over 70 books, covering AI-related books from computer science, engineering, mathematical statistics, and the humanities and social sciences. These include conference proceedings, monographs, and textbooks.

How do you engage with the academic and research community to keep the AI Collection up-to-date and in which way?

Our editorial team closely monitors the developments in the research field and continuously invites experts in the field to write cutting-edge content. At the same time, we attend top-tier conferences in the field every year to understand the latest research progress and topics of interest to readers, and ensure that this information is integrated into our book acquisition work. Additionally, the Springer Nature AI eBook Collection will include a large number of conference proceedings, which will contain first-hand research findings in the field and reflect the most up-to-date research topics.

What makes the Springer Nature AI eBook Collection so unique?

The Springer Nature AI eBook collection is a comprehensive eBook collection covering various discipline perspectives and content types. The authors of the books in this collection are experts and scholars from a wide range of fields, including computer science, engineering, mathematical statistics, biomedicine, and the humanities and social sciences. Recognized authors in the field such as Tao Dacheng, Xin-She Yang, Erik Cambria, Christian Montag have contributed to this collection.

The content encompasses textbooks, monographs, edited volumes, professional books, and conference proceedings, making it a one-stop resource for researchers and students, covering everything from basic knowledge and theories to cutting-edge research findings.

Which areas of research will the AI Collection include?

This eBook Collection mainly focuses on six research areas:

  1. Computer Science and Engineering: including machine learning, deep learning, computer vision, natural language processing and knowledge graphs.
  2. Mathematical and Statistical Sciences: covering statistical learning, data mining and pattern recognition.
  3. Healthcare and Biomed: such as medical image segmentation, intelligent diagnostics and drug development.
  4. Fintech: including quantum finance, intelligent trading systems, risk management, and fraud detection.
  5. Humanities and Social Sciences: exploring the impact of AI on society, law, and ethics.
  6. Environment and Sustainability: studying the application of AI in climate change and resource optimization.

In addition to these research areas, it reflects the latest research and industry trends in the following fields:

  1. AI-Generated Content (AIGC): widely used in content creation, such as news writing and creative design.
  2. Smart Manufacturing: the application of AI in automated production, quality control, and equipment maintenance.
  3. Smart Transportation: autonomous driving and traffic flow optimization are key focuses.
  4. AI and Cybersecurity: AI is used for detecting cyber-attacks, simulating phishing attacks, and enhancing security defenses.
  5. Sustainable AI: reducing the energy consumption of AI systems and using AI to optimize sustainability in other industries.
  6. AI Legislation and Ethics: with the widespread application of AI, the formulation of relevant laws and regulations has become an important trend.
  7. Multimodal Robotics and Augmented Reality: multifunctional robots and spatial computing technologies will change human-machine interactions.
  8. AI in Climate Change: AI is used for monitoring carbon emissions, predicting extreme weather, and optimizing energy use.

These areas and trends demonstrate the wide application and far-reaching impact of artificial intelligence across multiple disciplines.

In what areas of research are you expecting this eBook Collection to expand in the future?

Based on the search results and analysis, research areas that are expected to expand in the AI book collection in the future are Generative Models, Multi-modal Learning, Causality in AI Systems, Interdisciplinary Applications, Ethical and Social Implications, Advanced AI Legislation and Policy, Sustainable AI Initiatives, AI in Education, AI in the Humanities and Arts as well as AI and Robotics.

These areas of research are not only expected to advance the field of AI but also have a significant impact on various industries, policies, and society as a whole.
