Introduction to the LC-MS coupling technique

  • Basics of HPLC (RPLC and HILIC)
  • Coupling techniques and ionization: ESI, APCI, APPI
  • Explanation of different MS device types and their use


LC-MS in practice

  • Introduction to method development
  • Selection of solvents and additives (acids, bases, salts)
  • Basics of mass spectrometry (isotope patterns, resolution, mass accuracy, sensitivity)
  • Measurement and calculation of resolution, mass accuracy, S/N and sensitivity
  • Sensitivity test, calibration
  • Performance test, (re)calibration and maintenance
  • LC-MS troubleshooting

Your top speaker:

PD Dr. habil. Thomas Letzel, born in 1970, studied chemistry (1992-1998) at the Technical University of Munich and the LMU Munich and received his doctorate in 2001 with an environmental analysis topic at the Technical University of Munich and then completed a two-year postdoctoral stay at the Vrijen Universiteit Amsterdam. In 2009 he habilitated at the Technical University of Munich, where he has been teaching and researching as a private lecturer ever since. Until 2018 he was head of the analytical research group AFG at the TUM, 2014-2017 acting head of the professorship for pharmaceutical analysis at the LMU and has been the founder and managing director of the Analytical Research Institute for Non-Target Screening GmbH (AFIN-TS) since 2018. To date, he has developed many new analytical platforms, workflows and strategies for the detection, identification and determination of functional properties of organic molecules from complex mixtures in the various scientific disciplines. The results are reflected in his more than 75 scientific publications and 4 books to date.

Course duration:

3 days for 3 hours in the afternoon

Target audience: 

The course is aimed at HPLC users who use LC-MS analysis in their laboratory or who want to get started with this technology. The basics and peculiarities of this technique are covered as well as the determination of quantitative results. The aim of this seminar is to impart basic knowledge of LC-MS and to make it easier to get started with this technique with practical tips. Basic knowledge of HPLC is an advantage.

At the end of the course, participants will receive a Springer certificate confirming their participation in the course.
