Our History

Macmillan van

In 1843, brothers Daniel and Alexander Macmillan founded a publishing company to champion great writing. They soon made their mark on the literary world, publishing works by Lewis Carroll, Alfred Lord Tennyson, Thomas Hardy and Rudyard Kipling to name but a few.

As the company grew, so did the two brothers’ belief in the importance of learning. They launched the scientific research journal Nature, followed by the Palgrave imprint, promoting education and academic scholarship around the world. Both continue to be at the forefront of ground-breaking research to this day.

When former British Prime Minister Harold Macmillan became Chairman, he established the company as a world-leading educational publisher with an outstanding reputation. At Macmillan Education, we continue to build on this rich heritage by creating pioneering and forward-thinking educational materials for communities around the world.

Jeremy Diéguez

Managing Director of Language Learning

Jeremy Diéguez is the Managing Director of Language Learning, responsible for English Language Learning predominantly in the K12 space, together with Private Language Schools and Adult Education, as well as overseeing Spanish Curriculum Publishing operations throughout Latin America and Spain. 

With a degree in Business Administration, Jeremy also holds a 'life degree' in educational publishing, having worked in the industry now for over 30 years and is keen to continue contributing his know-how to providing learning solutions that inspire and advance learning. 

Since joining Macmillan Education in 2001, Jeremy has held several different roles within the company: MD Macmillan Iberia until 2012, MD Europe Division from 2004 to 2009, MD Grupo Macmillan (Iberia and Latin America) from 2010 to 2014 and MD Language Learning and Global Education from 2014 until 2022, then returning to his MD Language Learning position that he still holds today.

Emma Bourne is the Managing Director of Curriculum and our Macmillan Education ELT businesses across the Middle East, North Africa and Asia.

Macmillan Education, a division within Springer Nature, is one of the leading global research, educational and professional publishers. Macmillan Education advances learning with touch points from pre-primary to adult learners and business professionals, providing high quality publishing for teachers and students.

Emma’s career in international educational publishing spans over three decades, providing her with a wealth of knowledge and experiences in the Education sphere. Before joining Macmillan in December 2013, Emma held a variety of leadership roles, working in both English Language Teaching (ELT) and Curriculum. Emma has a passion for teaching, learning and coaching; She strives to enhance and share that knowledge throughout her role.
