About this course

Some journal Editors may already be comfortable handling manuscripts which feature key issues in research ethics such as ethics approval, informed consent to participate and publish, animal and plant ethics or trial registration. However, in subjects which feature these ethical aspects less frequently, or in multi-disciplinary journals, Editors may be less comfortable. These modules aim to demystify five key topics in research ethics and help Editors understand the requirements.

Who should take this course?

These modules have been written for journal Editors who are either new to the editing process, or new to the specific topic. They are designed as resources, so that Editors can refer back to them after completion if they encounter a challenging situation. You can take a single module, or all of them, at your own pace, and you can leave a module and return to it at another time.

What will I learn in this course?

The first module gives an overview of the ethics approval requirements for studies involving humans. The second discusses the requirements for informed consent to participate in research and informed consent for publication of individual data and images. The third gives an overview of ethics requirements for animal studies and when ethics approval is required. The fourth considers ethics and consent requirements for internet research studies and the specific associated challenges. The final module presents the requirements for clinical trial registration for any journals that publish articles affecting public health or human welfare. These modules aim to demystify these topics and explain the practical aspects of handling related manuscripts.
